Services – Youth Training Centre
Creative Literacy
The literacy project at the Clare Youth Service is a learning hub based within the Community Training Centre and servicing the young people who attend there. The project also works with a range of learners in various other projects and programmes which need literacy support.
A central aim of the project is to offer literacy and language training in all forms, ranging from basic tuition to deep language work to certified communications programmes such as FETAC Communications.
The project works in an innovative and imaginative way with I.T. and has recently acquired state of the art assistive technology for learners. This includes talking text and speaking dictionaries, to name but a few innovations!
Arts based practices are a central approach to literacy at the Clare Youth Service and we try to weave language, music, literature and drama together to create an environment where the imagination can flourish and where the interior life of the young person is given expression.
We showcase our work on an annual basis by performing a themed show: a blend of music, song and text which we present to family, friends, staff and invited guests at our local arts centre, Glór. 'Pack Up Your Troubles' and 'Making Light of Hard Times' have been performed in 2005 and 2006 and we are currently rehearsing for our 2007 show!
